German Central Committee against Tuberculosis
The German Central Committee against Tuberculosis (DZK), as a center of competence for tuberculosis, monitors the development of the disease at national as well as international level and investigates possible effects on Germany. Its members include the Robert Koch Institute and various other German professional societies and associations, as well as the majority of the German states. It is a non-profit association supported by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG).
Goal
The aim of the DZK is the development as well as the dissemination of knowledge about the infectious disease tuberculosis for professional audience and public.
Responsibilities
Observation of the development of tuberculosis
The DZK monitors the development of tuberculosis and its possible direct and indirect effects for Germany.
Preparation of guidelines and recommendations
The DZK coordinates and prepares recommendations for action, statements, information material and guidelines for the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of tuberculosis.
Network
Through a network of physicians specialized in tuberculosis, the DZK answers questions from both the professional medical and private sectors. Furthermore, it supports networking and exchange between institutions and organizations that play an important role in the control of tuberculosis. Thus, it represents an important link between all national institutions involved in tuberculosis control.
Research and teaching
The findings obtained in the course of health care research are used as recommendations for the benefit of a broad public. The DZK organizes events, holds lectures and courses on the subject of tuberculosis and participates in specialist articles and textbook contributions.
Consultation and public relations
The DZK carries out educational and advisory work for physicians, medical personnel, responsible agencies at the federal and state levels, health authorities, patients and the general public. It is the contact for the press, radio and television on all questions concerning tuberculosis.
International
On a global level, the DZK cooperates with many international institutes. The institute regularly participates in international conferences and meetings on tuberculosis control and supports and advises international tuberculosis projects. Within the framework of the GHPP, the DZK supports projects for cross-border tuberculosis surveillance and control.
