The CARe (Capacity Building in Applied Public Health Research in GHPP partner countries) project will soon hold its last in-person workshop. The workshop is part of an on-the-job training programme in applied public health research, which has been running since October 2023.

Twenty-seven public health specialists from the African region will participate in the ten-day workshop. The workshop will focus on training early career public health specialists in: qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods (e.g., descriptive analysis, basic inferential analysis, thematic analysis), data visualisation, and research dissemination. Employing techniques such as group work, case studies, hands-on exercises, and discussions, the workshop is designed to be interactive. Participants will also partake in a fireside chat with experts, social activities, and a team-building event to facilitate networking.

The workshop is the last of three in-person workshops that have been conducted over the course of the CARe project. All workshops are part of a comprehensive, 26-month, on-the-job professional online and in-person training programme. The aim is to build capacity in applied public health research in national public health institutes, ministries of health and public health institutions in African countries.

The training covers: 1) in-person workshops to intensively learn about applied public health research, 2) monthly live sessions on the above-mentioned topics, 3) guided online self-study, 4) monthly webinars with topic experts to discuss current public health issues, and 5) bimonthly mentorship meetings where the CARe team guides the participants in completing their research projects.

The training participants have varied professional backgrounds. They work with African partner institutions as part of Global Health Protection Programme (GHPP) projects, in national public health institutes and other public health service institutions. The training programme has been running since October 2023 and will conclude in December 2025.
