Short Description

The COVID-19 pandemic is exerting enormous pressure on health systems around the world. Following the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak, health systems strengthening activities and interventions received increased funding and gained prominence in Guinea and Sierra Leone. Germany has played a major role in responding to the Ebola epidemic in these countries and in re-building and strengthening their health systems, whether directly or indirectly. The situation is ideal to assess how well health systems in these countries have absorbed the shock of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Project Objectives

Using malaria as a case study, this project will:

• Measure the change in the delivery of essential health interventions and its consequences on equitable access
• Assess the change in level of trust vis-à-vis the health system due to COVID-19 pandemic and the government’s response
• Analyse the capacities to adapt national and local health systems to the COVID-19 pandemic
• Model the long-term consequences of the disruption of health systems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on malaria health outcomes and costs for the health system
